All were rescued but most went to WWI...as did Frank Hurley for the Australian Army corp in the Middle Esat. But in 1920 he led a series of air and shipboard ventures to remote parts of southern Papua together with anthropologists and pilots. His photographic work is astounding...a treasure...increasingly scarce book -$140
