BLOWN UP, BLOWN OVER & BLOWN AWAY - The second law of Thermodynamics and me, Colin Putt (editing, final chapters Jill Kenny) - published privately by Jill, Colin's niece in Kerikeri NZ, signed by Jill Kenny, 368 pages large format softbound, 1st edition 2020, illustrated in B&W & colour, maps, New Zealand born - Australian Colin Putt, better known as Puttoh, wrote 70% of his autobiography before he died in 2016. It is masterful that Jill Kenny has completed the job with the help of taped archives recorded in Australia. Born 1926 in Auckland Puttoh took part in the 1962 New Zealand expedition to what was then Dutch New Guinea to explore the approaches to Carstensz Pyramid, finding the all-important New Zealand pass. 1964 saw him alongside skipper Bill Tilman on Patanela sailing from Sydney to make the first ascent of Big Ben, highest summit of the glaciated active volcano on Heard Island. In 1970 Puttoh sailed to SW Greenland with Tilman aboard Sea Breeze ( Fellow crewman Australian Iain Dillon has written a terrific Foreword to the book), Other polar yachting expeditions followed, notably the Project Blizzard expedition to Mawson's hut, Commonwealth Bay aboard Dick Smith Explorer (1984) & as engineer aboard the same yacht now renamed Alan & Vi Thistlethwayte into the Ross Sea on Greg Mortimer's Mt Minto Expedition (1988). Puttoh also made a replica East African trading canoe sailing it from Indonesia to Madagascar. Puttoh worked as a chemical engineer for ICI in Sydney & mentoring many students at Sydney University. Puttoh's humour and his home-made polar-yachting clothing ice axes etc are legendary...just wait till you read the chapter " A view of Mt Minto from the engine room"...hilarity prevailed despite the seriousness of keeping a decrepit yacht afloat in the Southern Ocean. If you liked the long introduction that Puttoh wrote for the Diadem Omnibus of Tilman's seven sailing books then you'll be blown away by this life darn well lived. $50
